In this thesis, we propose that the French writer Georges Bernanos (1888 - 1948) built a history of the decay of European civilization by establishing his critique of modernity in the context of the first half of the twentieth century. In the quest to understand Bernanos argument, in the face of a broader scenario of authors who did not interpret modernity from the optimistic point of view of the development of humankind, a tradition associated with the Enlightenment, we analyzed his combat writings Letter to the British, France against Robots, Freedom, what for? and the articles published in the newspaper O Jornal. We identified how Bernanos sought to weave this narrative from the description of the formation of the modern world as a process of disenchantment of the world, of devaluation of Catholic values and as a constant process of loss of individual freedoms due to the centralization of the State and the multiplication of machines. In this sense, throughout the thesis we seek to reflect on how the author operated with concepts such as progress, revolution, freedom, totalitarianism to build his history decay of European civilization.
